An eye exam is a crucial step in diagnosing, ruling out, or monitoring an eye disease. In addition to individuals with a previously diagnosed condition, who, in consultation with the specialist, will undergo periodic check-ups to monitor its progress, your primary care physician may refer you to an ophthalmologist to clarify the nature of symptoms such as decreased visual acuity; blurred vision; the presence of colored spots, halos, or dots in the visual field; if part of the visual field is obscured; or if you have any eye lesions of any kind.
